Someone Else Created a Google Business Profile for Your Business? Here's How to Claim It

You searched for your business on Google… and there it is — a Google Business Profile you didn’t create. Maybe it was set up by a past employee, a marketing agency, or someone else entirely.

Now you want to update it, manage reviews, and ensure it reflects your brand — but you don’t have access.

This is a common problem, and the good news is: you can request access and take back control.

Here’s what to do (and how Innovatio can help you through it).

Step 1: Search for Your Business on Google

Search your business name in Google. If a profile already exists, you’ll see a box on the right (on desktop) or at the top (on mobile) with your business details — address, phone number, reviews, photos, etc.

If it says "Claim this business" or “Own this business?”, that’s a good sign. It means no one has fully verified the profile — and you can easily claim it.

But if it says the business is verified and doesn’t give you a claim option, it means someone else has ownership.

Step 2: Request Access (Ownership Transfer)

Click on “Own this business?” or go to the Google Business Profile Manager and search for your business. You’ll see an option to request access.

Google will send an email to the current profile owner asking them to grant you ownership or management rights. If they don’t respond within 3 days, you’ll be given a chance to verify the business yourself and claim the profile.

But be careful: submitting incorrect information or skipping steps can slow the process or get your request denied.

Step 3: Prepare to Verify Ownership

If the current owner denies your request — or doesn't respond — Google may allow you to verify the business through:

  • A video verification (you show Google around your office/store)

  • Business documents (license, utility bill, signage photos, etc.)

  • Phone call or email (to a listed business number or domain email)

This step must be handled carefully. One mistake in the process could delay your claim or get it rejected.

Step 4: Let Innovatio Handle It for You

We understand that this process can feel overwhelming — especially if you’re not familiar with Google’s system or if your previous agency still has access.

At Innovatio, we’ve helped many businesses in this exact situation:

  • Claiming an unverified profile

  • Transferring ownership from ex-employees or agencies

  • Resolving conflicts between multiple listings

  • Re-verifying suspended or locked profiles

We do it the right way — with proper documentation, clear communication, and full compliance with Google’s policies.

You deserve to own your own business identity online — and we’re here to help make that happen.
